Read for the MS Readathon, to raise funds for those suffering from multiple sclerosis. One novel that has received much critical approval, The Tiger in the Smokein some ways seems overdrawn and overwritten. It will be interesting to see if she continues in this darker, more cynical vein from here on out, and whether or not Campion will regain any of his former personality. It opens with Campion waking in a hospital with amnesia, overhearing a guard and a nurse talking about how he killed a police officer.

One novel that has received much critical approval, The Tiger in the Smokein some ways seems overdrawn and overwritten. He remembers that he and Oates were investigating a counterfeiting operation undercoverbut had been ambushed by their enemies and assaulted, causing Campion's amnesia. Naturally, it takes a bad case of traumatic amnesia to do it and his timing couldn't be worse: Amanda, weary of waiting for him to come around, has fallen under the spell of a charming other man and wants out of their engagement of convenience. Pemand This is probably now my favorite Campion book, which I never expected to happen. And it sort of works. A major whew followed this one!

Amanda tells Campion that she is falling in love with Lee Aubrey, causing him further anguish. The device itself is not entirely satisfying, but Allingham commits herself to it, perseveres, and makes the best anyone could of the gimmick. The most appropriate quote to describe how I felt is found in the book itself: "He was trying to fit together a jigsaw puzzle without knowing what sort of picture the pieces were expected to make. He steals a car and drives away.

Traitors purse book

Several blogging friends rushed to my rescue with suggestions to read other "Albert Campion Mystery" novels by Margery Allingham, and the one getting the most votes was Traitor's Purse.

Traitors Purse by Margery Allingham

I swore that if I got too lost and felt that I would need to back-read one of the preceding novels, I was going to lem the book.

Read for the MS Readathon, to raise funds for those suffering from multiple sclerosis. How to write review of this book without putting out spoilers for this truly magnificent piece of work by Allingham? Panicking, he knocks Hutch out and flees to the nearby town of Coachingford. The writing is excellent.

More Work for the Undertaker. He overhears a nurse talking to a policeman and discovers he is wanted for murder.

Traitor's Purse Traitor's Purse About book She addresses him as… Campion! She looks quite familiar but he cannot put a name to the pretty face.

Perfect setup for a nail-biting thriller, no? The prisoner that was being discussed when Campion awoke was in fact the unconscious and disguised Oates. It succeeds on two fronts: as a page-turner and as an excellent lesson in craft.

Realising he has taken Amanda for granted, Campion proposes that they marry the next day, and she agrees.

And quite frankly, though I adore Campion just the way he is, it's a humbling he sorely needs. Also he's not as good as Lord Wimsey, but then who is?

He overhears the nurse and a bobby discussing about the man killing a bobby and seriously wounding the other one. Later in his career, he has less to do and becomes a sort of consultant. Albert has lost his memory because of a blow to the head but knows that he has a very important task to perform, one that is vital to the War effort.

The story starts with a bang! Strength of prose can carry an otherwise mediocre work to new heights, especially in a mystery novel or, at least, it did in the few mystery novels I have read. All lines of investigation have gone slack, and only one man knows the enormity of the situation.

Assuming that he is the patient being discussed, the man escapes in a stolen car but soon realises he is being followed. Albert Campion wakes up in hospital with a head injury and amnesia, and from there on, the action never really lets up. He escapes down the hall, dresses himself in some fire protection gear and makes for the exit.

Albert Campion, the detective!! The Historical Dictionary of British Spy Fiction contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. He finds himself on the run, suspected of attacking a policeman, as he tries to avert a catastrophe.

Some are just too full of extreme characters, while others, such as Tiger in the Smoke, are terrifying in their realism.
